August 29, 2021 - And Even Greater Things Will You Do

Very often, the scripture verse referring to our doing even greater things than Jesus did is interpreted to mean that we’ll have a ‘greater’ number of years to live our lives in ways that he taught – more than just the three years during which Jesus offered his teachings and ministry on earth. There is another, much broader interpretive view we can take. It’s one that guides us to look beyond specific lengths of time or lists of accomplishments, to the greater and infinite good we can bring forth when we align our consciousness with the Christ presence in us – the very presence of Love and Life.

August 22, 2021 - The Author of Your Life

‘You are the author of your own life story. You have the leading role and get to determine how you interact with your supporting cast and other characters.’ Those are words from author Susan C. Young. They are our centering words as we begin our process of discovering how we can control our own narrative, and by doing so, create and live our best life ever.

August 15, 2021 - The Destination and Journey of Wholeness

From a spiritual perspective, Wholeness is considered to be a divine idea of Spirit. As such, it is beyond our ability to fully define it. The good news about that is that there are multiple ways in which we can go about bringing our wholeness into expression. We’ll look at some of the ingredients to focus on to help us on our journey, including self-awareness, balance, self-actualization, and the dynamic nature of wholeness itself.

August 8, 2021 - Asking the Better Question

There once was a church staff who would gather together at the start of each week to review the prior Sunday’s celebration service. Only two questions were asked and answered. First, ‘What hummed?’ In other words, what parts of the service touched their hearts or brought a smile to their face? And second, ‘What could we do better?’ Notice that no questions were asked as to what anyone had done wrong. Sometimes asking a better question can help us avoid falling into self-blame and inspire us forward towards continued progress, improvement, and growth.

August 1, 2021 - How to Change Others

Each of us can likely think of at least one person – whether in our lives now or from our past – that we would like to change. Sometimes it can even seem as if it would be so easy for that person to do so. We can see the steps so clearly. And yet, everything we are seeing is looking beyond who the person is at the moment. When we look in the moment, we more clearly see that change for any person must come from within themselves. Today we look at how we can still play a positive role in supporting another through times of personal change.

July 25, 2021 - Being Prosperous, No Matter What Series #3: The Prosperity of Grace

Grace is something that is always with us, something we never need to request. It is one of the most wonderful ways to expand our hearts, our lives, and the inspiration we can offer to others. We’ll look at the prosperity of grace by seeing grace as a gift, a beautiful way to live - present even when God feels absent, the protection it can provide, and the human face it often has.

July 18, 2021 - Improving Our Relationships

We have long lived in a world wherein a dualistic system of reward and punishment, good and bad have long been the basis for judging people and the mistakes they’ve made. Even in many religions, God is seen as the head of punishment and retribution. This was not the way of Jesus, nor of many other wisdom traditions. A better way is that of seeking healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation for ourselves and others. We’ll look at how we can improve our relationships by exploring a process used within the Navajo tradition of healing and justice.

July 11, 2021 - The First Step to Spiritual Healing

There are many different ways we might experience a need or desire for healing. Often, we first see the conditions of suffering in our lives as involving other people or circumstances. However, if we are willing to turn away from the tendency to blame someone/something else, we can instead see our need to focus on spiritual healing for ourselves. Approaching it from this perspective helps us to find the gifts hidden in the experience that are the stepping stones into living a life of wholeness that goes beyond healing or personal fulfillment to deeper realizations of our true spiritual Self.

July 4, 2021 - Inner and Outer Freedom

James Finley is a faculty member at the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He once wrote, ‘Our deepest freedom rests not in our freedom to do what we want to do but rather in our freedom to become who God wills us to be.’ This week we’ll explore a bit of the differences between our outer freedoms and those that are contained within us and expressed when we let go of that which serves to block our view of our authentic spirituality as taught by Jesus.

June 27, 2021 - The Unknown and Unknowable

Life often presents us with big questions. How do we accept the unknowable? Where is God and what is our relationship with It? What is the idea of ‘mystery’, and how can we explain the events in life we would deem as being ‘unwelcome’? Why do we often recoil from life’s questions, and at the same time, demand to know the answers? We’ll take a look at what it means to know enough, how to enlarge our understanding of it, and find comfort in the rest – all through deepening any number of our spiritual practices.

June 20, 2021 - Compassionate Connections

Ever since the onset of COVID-19, the idea of making connections has been front and center. When our cities and states shut down and we were advised to stay in our homes and isolate as much as possible, the value of the connections we once had exponentially increased. We began to create new ways to experience these sacred bonds. And yet, as the pandemic eases and we look forward to life returning to a sense of normal, we can still find new ways to enhance our connections, both those that are most special to us as well as those from seemingly mundane interactions we may have been missing out on long before the pandemic even arrived.

June 6, 2021 - Finding Yourself, Finding Your Way Home

For many of us, we allow our playfulness to take the back seat in our lives as we grow and mature into adulthood. We can allow the childlike spontaneity of fun to go by the wayside. It’s not hard to get caught up in productivity, accomplishing, and a mindset of always moving forward. It is so important to allow space for both work and play. Not only can it help us stay active and healthy, it can also help us tap into personal, emotional, and spiritual growth. Let’s see how ‘growing up’ can free us to ‘become as a child’ once again.

May 30, 2021 - Grief Is a Spiritual Practice

Grief is something that takes as long as it takes. There is also no set right or wrong way to express it. In fact, many would say that grief does not really end; rather, it is each of us whose lives eventually begin to take new shape around it. If that is true, we could look at grief as being one element of our overall spiritual practices. It could very well serve us when we find ourselves asking some of the biggest questions following a loss: Why this? Why now? Where is God? Who am I now? We’ll look at grief and its processes – releasing some of its myths and embracing the power it has to help us move forward.

May 9, 2021 - An Effusion of Light

In his book, ‘In the Flow of Life’, author Eric Butterworth offers: ‘If there is one thing one needs more than anything else, it is light; light in terms of insight into self, guidance along life’s way, knowledge of the secrets of the universe, and the wisdom to use light and not abuse it.’ The key lies in where we look when we desire more light in our lives. Do we look ‘out there’? Or do we see the ever-flickering light within our own being?

May 2, 2021 - The Forgiveness Awakening

The root meaning of forgive is ‘to give completely, without reservation.’ It is in the fullness of forgiving that we open ourselves to healing, wisdom, unresolved life experiences, and so much more. It can be a source of new beginnings, transformative understanding, and wonderful awakenings to personal and spiritual freedom.

April 11, 2021 - Volunteer Appreciation Day: The Soul's Call to Service

We’ll take time to delve further into how this call to service blesses us as much, if not more, than it does others. We’ll also celebrate our Volunteer of the Year for 2020.

April 4, 2021 - Easter Sunday: The Quiet of Easter

One might think that after the drama, the ups and downs, confusion and more contained in the season and stories of Lent, we might expect a loud and exuberant celebration of the resurrection. And yet, it is a quiet celebration. Even so, quiet does not mean empty. Easter is filled with new awakenings to our spirituality and sacred potential.

March 28, 2021 - Palm Sunday: A Transformational Journey

We might call this day the one when we ‘arrive at Palm Sunday’. Jesus, too, ‘arrived’. It wasn’t only a geographical journey he had taken; it was also one in which he traversed various places within his spirituality. On this special day, we’ll look at the elements of: ALTAR & SABBATH, VISION, CONSERVATION & UNDERSTANDING, AND OVERCOMING as we end our Lenten journey and prepare for the resurrection celebration of Easter.

March 21, 2021 - Order, Disorder, Reorder Series #3: Reorder

In this final installment of or series, we’ll see how arriving at REORDER does not eliminate the first two aspects of the journey, that of ORDER and DISORDER. It actually includes them. We arrive at REORDER having let go of control and order as we knew it and accepting disorder and committing to move through it. The more we open to these cycles in life, the more we move closer to letting go of duality and embracing divine principles of oneness, love, inclusivity, respect . . . and live our lives with an expanded consciousness and broader point of view.

March 14, 2021 - Order, Disorder, Reorder Series #2: Disorder

Everyone has likely had at least one experience in their life where it felt as if they had no control whatsoever. For those who like Order in their lives, this experience of DISORDER can be quite unsettling. And, that’s the point. These are the times when we’re asked to set our egos aside, or at least join them in partnership with a higher power. As author Paula D’Arcy writes, ‘God comes to you disguised as your life.’ It’s when we surrender control -  allow a disruption to our usual way of thinking - that we discover greater depths of our spiritual selves and experience real and meaningful growth in life.

February 28, 2021 - Weathering the Storm Series #4: Routine and Ritual for Challenging Times

The Dalai Lama once said that the secret to happiness was ‘Routines’. Routines, and the ritual we can create them to be, are powerful ways to ground ourselves and anchor our days. When times are challenging, it’s even more important to not let them go by the wayside, if possible. There are many diverse ways to immerse yourself in routine and ritual – both indoors and out – to help you stay grounded as you weather your personal storms of life.

February 21, 2021 - Weathering the Storm Series #3: Letting Go of Concerns in the Midst of Change

Have you ever felt with great certainty that a particular experience in your life was nearing completion? Have you ever felt at depth that change was calling, and yet, have no clarity about what that change might be? It’s not an unusual occurrence, but also not always the easiest one to navigate. Now that we are in the season of Lent, we’ll explore a few ideas about letting go, being in the in-between, and preparing for whatever new adventures are patiently waiting for us.

February 14, 2021 - Weathering the Storm Series #2: The Heart of Healing

There is a quote from the ancient Hindu text. ‘the Rigveda’, that speaks of the supremacy of love. It read, ‘In the beginning Love arose, which was the primal germ cell in the mind.’ Love is the basis for so many spiritual traditions, including Unity. We’ll spend some time looking at some of the areas in our lives that often call for healing and see how we can apply the healing power of love to bring us back to a place of wholeness.

January 31, 2021 - Everyday Prayer

Since the beginning of time, people of all civilizations have prayed. From prayer beads to prayer wheels, from solemn Gregorian chants to foot-stomping music, from the fervent worshipers flogging their backs with ropes to the seeker quietly sitting cross-legged atop a mountain, there are as many ways of praying as there are people who pray. We’ll look at some of the ‘what, why, and how’ of this powerful spiritual practice that lies at the core of our Unity movement.

January 17, 2021 - The Beholder

Perhaps hearing the word ‘behold’ takes our thoughts to images of how we see others and all that is surrounding us in the moment. What if we turn within instead? What if there was a ‘beholder’ in us? A presence that would see without judgment, make even the mundane holy, and bring a transforming power to any and all situations. Today, we will take a closer look at how we can view all the experiences of life with new awareness and appreciation.

January 3, 2021 - White Stone Sunday: What's in a Name?

Rachel Ingber once said, ‘A name represents identity, a deep feeling that holds tremendous significance to its owner.’ This deep feeling of significance often leads us to realize that we also have a spiritual identity, one that originates in the I AM that is God. We begin the New Year with our annual White Stone service. It is an opportunity to prayerfully discern a quality as our ‘spiritual name’ for 2021. This name wills serve as the light upon our path as we bring forth all we are called to be as the year unfolds.
